A plane belonging to Taiwanese carrier TransAsia Airways has crash-landed in a river in Taipei.

More than 50 people were onboard at the time, and a number of people were reportedly injured.

Some reports said there were several people trapped inside the plane in need of rescue.

Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) showed a picture of a plane almost submerged in the Keelung river.

The ATR-72 had just taken off from Taipei Songshan Airport and was headed to Kinmen Airport on the outskirts of Taiwan, just off the coast of south-east China, CNA said.

The cause of the latest incident was not immediately clear.

But CNA quoted a government spokesman as saying the plane crashed after hitting an elevated bridge.

Local channel ETTV showed footage of the plane banking and hitting a road bridge before crashing into the river.

Local media reported that several people had been rescued so far and sent to a nearby hospital.

In July last year 48 people died when a TransAsia Airways plane crashed amid stormy weather in Taiwan's Penghu archipelago.

Dozens awaiting rescue after TransAsia Airways plane crash lands in Taipei river: Reports

TAIPEI - More than 40 people are awaiting rescue after their TransAsia Airways plane crashed into a river in New Taipei City, news reports said on Wednesday.

About 10 others have been sent to hospitals in New Taipei City, which encircles Taipei, reported Taiwan's United Daily News. The extent of their injuries is not clear, it said.

The ATR-72 turboprop aircraft with 58 onboard was flying from Taipei to the offshore island of Kinmen when it crashed into the Keelung River after apparently ramming into a highway viaduct, the quasi-official Central News Agency (CNA) said. The crash, which happened shortly after the plane took off from Songshan Airport in Taipei, was suspected to be due to insufficient propelling force, UDN said.

A taxi was also damaged in the crash, the reports said, without giving other details.

The New Taipei City Fire Department has despatched five rescue teams, equipped with speed boats, to the accident site near the Nanyang Bridge in Xizhi district, CNA said.

TransAsia, a privately-owned airline, had suffered a serious crash last July, when flight GE222 crashed near the airport at Magong on the Penghu island chain during a rainstorm, killing 48 people and injuring 10 others. That aircraft was also an ATR-72.

Mr Wang Hsing-chung, an Aviation Safety Council spokesman, was cited as saying on Wednesday investigators were heading for the site to find out the reason for the latest crash.

ATR statement on TransAsia's flight GE235

ATR regrets to confirm that an ATR 72-600 operated by Taiwan's TransAsia Airways was involved in an accident today at around 10.45 am (local time) near Taipei Songshan airport (Taiwan). The flight GE235 was operating between Taipei and Kinmen with 58 people on board.

The aircraft, registered under B-22816, was MSN (Manufacturing Serial Number) 1141.

At this time, the circumstances of the accident are still under investigation.

The Aviation Safety Council of Taiwan will lead the investigation and will be the official source of information. According to ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) regulations, ATR will advise the French Bureau d'Enquêtes et Analyses (BEA), safety investigation authority representing the State of the aircraft manufacturer.

ATR express its deepest sympathy to the families, friends and to those affected by the accident.
