North Korea’s national airline has introduced a new dark blue uniform, pictures taken by a visitor in November have shown.
Replacing the airlines’ previous red and white uniform, the new Air Koryo uniform features a studded white trim and hat complete with golden emblem.
Koryo Tours leader Simon Cockerell, who took the picture while traveling to North Korea in early November, said that the new uniform was seen being worn by female cabin crew members only.
“These contemporary looking uniforms, a somewhat stark contrast to the original, classic uniforms presently being phased out, may well be part of Air Koryo’s efforts to project an image of modernity to their customers” North Korean airline specialist David Thompson of Juche Travel Services, which is based near London.
“This is especially the case now that all of their international services are operated by modern, latest generation airliners. The oldest aircraft Air Koryo fly internationally is a Tupolev Tu-204 which is only 5 years’ old, and the newest is an Antonov An-148, a brand new aircraft delivered only a few months ago,” Thompson added.
In June Air Koryo bought an An-148 and an An-158 from Ukrainian airline manufacturer Antonev. The former holds 70 seats and the latter as many as 90, depending on seating configuration.
In March the Kyodo News Service of Japan reported Air Koryo’s plans to increase their scheduled flights between Pyongyang and Beijing from three times per week to five by mid-April. As such, they offered Monday and Friday flights between the two cities, in addition to their pre-existing Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday flights. Some believe that the move reflects the North’s need for additional foreign currency.
Air Koryo also offers flights to Shenyang in Northeast China and Vladivostok in the Russian Far East.
